Green River Power Plant #001
Green River Power #001 is a very important piece to us at the museum because she is a piece of local history. #001 was the switch engine used at the Tyrone Power Plant (which was served by the line owned by the museum today) until 1979 when a major accident resulting in the destruction of a GP-9 also owned by the plant resulted in the decision to truck coal for the plant in by road.
#001 was later used at K.U.'s Green River Facility until she was donated by the company to the museum. Today #001 is serviceable but is undergoing a restoration in order to insure that she will be able to run for generations to come. Once complete it is hoped that #001 can be used to haul the museums excursion train on special occassions.
#001 as she appears today in Green River colors. She is currently undergoing an overhaul of her motor power, braking system and checking of electrical components before she is used for excursion service.
#001 as she looked in her days at the Tyrone Plant. The museum has plans for a complete repaint of #001 to return her to this original appearance. To find out how you can help, please visit our donation or volunteer pages.
The famous "Mr. Kilowatt" - the postwar representative of the electrical companies across the nation. Once #001 is repainted, new "Mr. Kilowatt" decals will be applied.
When #001 arrived from Green River, a coupler pin was broken. It has since been replaced with a new pin and knuckle. #001 can now be used to switch around the yard and test out what she can do.
